Multidimensional Poverty Index
The Economist, A wealth of data: A useful new way to capture the many aspects of poverty, 7/29/2010, http://www.economist.com/node/16693283
A new poverty measurement index, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), adopted by the UN Development Program, incorporates measures of poverty indicators such as malnutrition, houses with dirt floors, and access to clean drinking water. According to the traditional Dollar-a-Day standard (adjusted for inflation), 20% of Bolivians live on less than $1.25 a day. The MPI suggests that a more accurate assessment would classify almost 40% of the Bolivian population as living in poverty.
