My New Apartment
This weekend I moved into my new apartment in La Paz. After a year living out of a backpack, I can finally offer my couch to any of you who happen to be passing through La Paz and need a place to crash. Here are a few quick notes about the new apt: Although I’ve run off to Bolivia, my apartment (which I still need to name, like a pet) is sandwiched between Calle Estados Unidos (USA Street) and Edificio Boston (The Boston Apartments). I now live a block away from the futbol stadium of the biggest team in Bolivia, Bolivar. I guess my Sundays will now consist of wonderful futbol matches. My second floor apartment is also above a bakery, so polluted city air filtering through my windows gets masked by pleasant smells from below. And if (when) I get hurt, I’m two blocks from three different private health clinics. Here, the private have better service than the public hospitals – but yes, Bolivia may be poor but it still does have public health care (and on a side note, did you know that even Rwanda has a public health care system?). On my first night in the apartment, without any plates, silverware, napkins, or really anything to host guests for a dinner, I treated Vivi to a gourmet meal of Mexican take out. We discovered that plastic bags provide elegant plates and Solo cups can make perfect serving spoons (see picture above). Thankfully the buffet style Make-Your-Own-Tacos consisted of tortillas so we didn’t need to MacGyver our own forks or knives.
