Graffiti Art

When will city governments start commissioning local graffiti artists to decorate their streets? Cities should look to decriminalize these harmless artists' work and embrace the valuable cultural expression. If city governments began commissioning graffiti masters to paint murals and decorate streets and public spaces, they would raise the pride of those living in the inner city. Commissioning large works surfaces individuals out from the criminal underground and embraces them with public acceptance.  Artists could proudly display their works to the world as productive members of society, now viewing their once rebellious action as a profession. Building owners could then control the themes of the artwork and get desired illustrations instead of spending money to paint over and scrub off unwanted vandalism. Inner city streets would shift from dirty eyesores to cultural hotbed. The monotonous grid-spaced brick buildings would fill with distinct artistic landmarks.

Instead of fighting the street art movement, cities need to embrace graffiti art and start commissioning the livening of public spaces.  Because honestly, who enjoys staring at brick all day?
