NYC's Underground Infrastructure

A fascinating look at New York City's hidden clockwork.  National Geographic has the full audio tour, stretching seven stories below ground.  It's amazing how complicated the intricacies of our cities truly are.

When critics wonder why Boston's Big Dig took 15 years to complete (1991-2006) and ran $6 billion over budget, they ignore the fact that the project included navigating around existing infrastructure, much like the pictured infrastructure in addition to above-ground obstacles.  Boston's underground today looks extremely similar to the New York diagram, but weaves in an additional layer of highway tunnels.

Also, even if technological advances help developing countries leap-frog certain infrastructure pains (just as cellphones eliminated the need for expensive telephone wire systems), certain burdens cannot be bypassed.  Visualizing the numerous layers of New York's underground only reinforces the difficulties catching up poses.
